Plans for a Super Wawa along Route 73 near Voorhees and Berlin Township are moving forward again.
The proposal was rejected by the Voorhees Planning Board last September following concerns about traffic along Cooper Road.
However, a New Jersey Superior Court judge recently ordered the board to reconsider the development application.
Developer NIKI-J&J Voorhees Cooper Partners LLC sued Voorhees Township in January following the rejection.
Since then, both parties have reached a tentative settlement. As part of the agreement, the developer would make traffic improvements along Cooper Road.
Meanwhile, the project is also moving through the approval process in neighboring Berlin Township.
The Berlin Township Planning and Zoning Board will consider the developer’s site plan application. The review covers the portion of the project located within Berlin Township.
Plans call for a 5,915-square-foot Wawa convenience store on approximately 4.95 acres. Additionally, the development would include 12 gasoline fueling stations.
Drivers would access the property from Route 73 and Cooper Road.
The proposed site sits approximately one-quarter mile south of the Cooper Road and Route 73 intersection. A 7-Eleven convenience store currently operates near that intersection.
The revived proposal represents another potential retail development along the heavily traveled Route 73 corridor.
Still, traffic impacts remain a central consideration as the project returns to the municipal approval process. The proposed road improvements could play an important role in determining the development’s future.
